Henry Park fired a 1-over 72 on Monday in Honolulu to advance to match play at the Manoa Cup.

Park, a 2009 Kealakehe graduate and a three-time Big Island Interscholastic Federation runner-up, made the turn at No. 18 bogey-free at 2-under. After a rough stretch in which he bogeyed four of seven holes, he carded his third birdie of the round on No. 8 to tie for the 16th best score at Oahu Country Club.

The University of Hawaii senior will face Kauai High golfer Pono Tokioka (77) at 7:21 today in the round of 64 at the Hawaii State Match Play Championship.

Kyle Suppa, Nick Ushijima, Richard Hattori and Brandan Kop each shot 68 to lead qualifying. Two-time defending champion David Fink is the top seed after drawing a bye into match play.

Speed clinic at Konawaena today

Joshua Abner, the track and field and cross-country coach at Honokaa High, and Rick Hagedorn of Speedburners will host the Big Island Speed Clinic today and Wednesday at Konawaena High.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. today, with the clinic running from 9 a.m. to noon on both days.

The clinic is open to athletes interested in becoming faster through proper speed training, and the cost is $100.

Progressive strength training camp this week

Performance training and injury prevention specialist Daniel Mar Chong will lead the Mar Athletic Performance Enhancement Camp for students age 14 and older Wednesday through Friday at Hawaii Prep’s Nakamaru Fitness Center.

Students can choose from one of two camp times: 1 to 2:30 p.m. or 2:30 to 4 p.m. The camp fee is $100, and space is limited to the first 20 athletes.

The camp will cover the fundamentals of a progressive strength training technique. Mar Chong breaks away from traditional strength training and introduces new performance enhancement training techniques. At the conclusion of every workout there will be a 10-15 minute presentation on hydration, nutrition and supplements by Hawaii Prep trainer Scott Oshiro.

league upcoming

Teams interested in registering for West Hawaii’s Hawaii Isle Police Activities League summer basketball league may sign up now.

The league runs from June 26 to July 31, and HIPAL will offer six boys age divisions (5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and high school) and three girls divisions (12-and-under, 14-and-under and high school).

The entry deadline is June 19.

Hapuna swim
set for June 30

The Hapuna Roughwater Swim will take place at 8 a.m. June 30 at Hapuna Beach State Park.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. on race day. Event organizers need water patrol volunteers.

King’s Swim
July 7 at Kailua Bay

Kona Aquatics will host its 18th annual King’s Swim at 8 a.m. July 7 at Kailua Bay.

The 1.2-mile course begins at Kailua Bay and ends at Kamakahonu Bay, directly in front of King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.

Event organizers will not allow fins or wetsuits. Applications are available at Bike Works (74-5583 Luhia St.) in Kailua-Kona.

A nonrefundable entry fee of $15 must accompany the application.

The registration deadline is June 30.

Late registration takes place from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. at Kailua Pier on race day. The late registration fee is $20.

Awards go to the top three male and female finishers and to winners in each of the event’s 14 age groups. Volunteers with kayaks or surfboards wishing to join the safety patrol for the swim are welcome to participate.

HGEA fun day
Sunday in Hilo

The Hawaii Government Employees’ Association will hold a tennis fun day from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Edith Kanakaole Multipurpose Stadium in Hilo.

The event offers tennis court time, tennis balls and refreshments for HGEA members. All three courts are reserved.

Mudry on
Emily T. Gail Show

Longtime golf writer Dick Mudry is a guest on this week’s Emily T. Gail Show, which is available at espnhawaii.com under “lineup” and as an iTunes podcast. Mudry will discuss the U.S. Open taking place at The Olympic Club in San Francisco this week. The United States Golf Association conducts the U.S. Open, and more than 7,000 amateur and professional players participate in the local qualifiers. Sean Maekawa, a Honokaa graduate who recently turned pro, won the local qualifier and earned a spot in the sectional qualifier.

Also, Actor Max Gail will give an update on the movie “42”, which is currently in production and is the story of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball when he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Also, West Hawaii Today’s Brendan Shriane will discuss sports and have information about getting events listed in West Hawaii Today. Gail will also talk with three Detroiters about the importance of major league sports in Detroit and much more.

The Hawaii Police Department’s traffic services section and the Hawaii Island Police Activities League will conduct Click It or Ticket 3-on-3 Basketball Tournaments on the following dates:

c Friday and Saturday: Keaau High School gym

c June 22-24: Old Pahoa High gymnasium

c July 29-Aug. 1: Kekuaokalani Gymnasium

c July 14: Kamehameha Park gymnasium in Kohala

c July 20-22: Papaaloa Gymnasium in Laupahoehoe

c Aug. 10-12: The new covered sports building in Panaewa

c Aug. 24-26: Honokaa Parks and Recreation sports complex

c Sept. 8: Naalehu gymnasium (tentative)

The tournaments offer five boys age divisions (5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14), a high school boys division, three girls age divisions (10-and-under, 12-and-under, 14-and-under) and a high school girls division. The tournament’s age cutoff date is Dec. 31, 2011.

Each division has a limit of 10 teams. Teams interested in participating must complete registration materials two weeks prior to the start of a tournament. Submit registration packets at the community policing office (formerly the receiving desk in the public safety building) in Hilo or the Kona police receiving desk. Interested teams may also fax materials to 961-2209 in East Hawaii or 327-3583 in West Hawaii.
